El Verano
The unincorporated community of El Verano is located just outside the city boundaries of Sonoma with small streets without sidewalks lined by shady trees.
To the east of Arnold Drive one finds smaller lots and neighborhood subdivisions; the west side has mostly larger acreage parcels over one half acre in size. In general, Arnold drive is also the dividing line for properties that are connected to the public sewer system, and those that have their own septic system. Properties west of Arnold drive mostly have to have their own septic system.
In earlier times many well to do San Franciscans had their summer cottages in El Verano. As the valley expanded and homes grew larger and more luxurious, El Verano came to represent good value for young families and first time home buyers. Many of these smaller summer cottages have been lovingly updated and expanded; one now can find a colorful mix of quaint stylish older cabins and custom homes on the same street.

In the middle of the neighborhood is Little Switzerland, a lively and fun country bar and dance palace. On Saturday evening bands are playing hot rhythms from West Coast Swing to Salsa.
Maxwell Village Center which is located next to Maxwell Village Regional Park, is the closest and biggest shopping center where you find the typical shopping and diners as elsewhere. The more individual “Mom and Pop” shops, coffee bars and restaurants are located down Highway 12 and Arnold Drive.
Local children attend the El Verano Elementary School, located on Riverside Drive in the center of the community, or the Altimira Middle School on Arnold Drive.
This community is also home to a fire station, post office and the Sonoma Valley Boys and Girls Club.
El Verano has approximately 4,000 residents living in 1,500 households. In 2000 the population density was 3,465 people per square mile.
