Sonoma Valley
Fine Living:
City of Sonoma:
The Sonoma Valley is comprised of the City of Sonoma, and an unincorporated area that includes the communities of Boyes Hot Springs, Eldrige, El Verano, Fetters Hot Springs, Agua Caliente, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Schellville, and Vineburg. These unincorporated areas are governed by the County of Sonoma.
While all of these unique towns bathe in the natural beauty of the "The Valley of the Moon", the City of Sonoma has the additional feature of its proximity to the historic Sonoma Plaza. The East Side of Sonoma , which is east from Broadway, with its vintage homes, larger lot sizes, beautiful gardens and closeness to numerous wineries make this a prized area. There are approximately 35,000 people living in the Sonoma Valley zip code of 95476, but only about 10,000 live within the City boundaries. .
Sonoma began with the Mission San Francisco Solano founded in1823. Sonoma was laid out in the standard form of a Mexican town, centered around the Plaza which is still the town's focal point, hosting many community festivals and drawing many Bay Area and international visitors all year round. The Plaza's eight acres and the surrounding street grid were laid out by General Mariano Guadelupe Vallejo in 1836, turning Sonoma from a mission town to a Mexican style pueblo.
Sonoma's early 20th-century City Hall, at the Plaza's center, was designed and built with four identical sides in order not to offend the merchants on any one side of the Plaza.
Today the Plaza is lined with charming shops, popular restaurants and Sonoma Valley agricultural specialties, including world-renowned cheeses and wines.
