Sonoma Valley Wineries
Sonoma Valley is a federal designated wine appellation region, garnering recognition worldwide. There are more than 60 wineries in the valley.
Many grape varietals are grown , all thriving in very specific conditions, unique to each area. for instance, in the cooler Caneros area ripening varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot.
In the warmer areas, along the hillsides and the valley floor, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon are favored.
Without a doubt, the Valley's wineries and vineyards, along with the industry they support, comprise the largest sector of the local economy.
But the valley's success in viticulture is far from a recent phenomenon. In fact, California's first commercial produced wine was made by Count Agoston Harazhaty in Sonoma in 1870s.
